189.

It is better to incur the displeasure of small men

Than to receive their flattery.

It is better to receive the criticism of men of high quality

Than to obtain their toleration.

190.

Those who love profit run along the outside of the Way:

Their mischief is apparent and shallow.

Those who love fame hide like mice in the burrow of the Way:

Their mischief is hidden and deep.

191.

Receiving a favor, and though it is considerable,

Not repaying it;

Drawing enmity, and though it is light,

Returning it in style;

Hearing of ill deeds, and though they are unclear,

Having no doubt about them;

Then, when good is apparent, doubting it altogether—

Such ways are the far end of cruelty;

This is brutality in the extreme.

You should be careful about this.

192.

Slanderers and gossips

Are like thin clouds covering the sun:

It will not be long before they clear up of themselves.

Flatterers and toadies

Resemble the gusts of wind that brush our flesh:

One is not conscious of any damage.

193.

On high mountain peaks, there are no trees, but in river valleys and meandering places

Grasses and trees grow dense.

Where water swirls or moves rapidly, there are no fish, but in deep pools and quiet places

Fishes and turtles congregate.

Thus is the gentleman extremely cautious

Of lofty actions

Or quick emotions.
